- In Aroldis Chapman, Reds hope they've found a southpaw Strasburg
GOODYEAR, ARIZ. -- Other than the facts that one throws with his right hand and the other with his left, that one is Californian and the other is Cuban, that one just got married and the other just left behind his entire family, and that one honeymooned in Kauai while the other defected in the Netherlands, Stephen Strasburg and Aroldis Chapman could be the same man, or at the very least the mirror image of each other as pitchers.
- Division III St. Mary's took a chance on Chris Harney, and it has paid off
Three days before the most important game of his life, St. Mary's men's basketball coach Chris Harney naturally worked late into the evening. But unlike most college coaches heading into a third-round NCAA tournament matchup, Harney wasn't breaking down game tape or holding extra practice sessions. Instead, he was armed with a hole puncher and several dozen lanyards to assemble the press passes for Friday's game. But it wasn't the only task at hand: Harney also had to transfer his team's practice jerseys from the washing machine to the dryer.
- Maryland Terrapins fine-tuning their offense in advance of the ACC tournament
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The churn began in earnest in early February. Day after day, the Maryland men's basketball team looked forward to its next opponent, searching for deficiencies that could be exploited. One of Coach Gary Williams's defining characteristics as a coach is his insular ability to move on to the next task, and that mind-set was evident in his players, as well, over the past month.
- Natalie Randolph to coach Coolidge High School football team
In Natalie Randolph's first season as wide receivers coach at H.D. Woodson High School in the District a few years ago, one of the most difficult moments each week came at the end of the game when the two teams lined up for their traditional handshake.

- Georgetown eases past cold-shooting South Florida in Big East tournament opener
NEW YORK -- It was the ragged sort of game that casts doubt on the wisdom of expanding the Big East tournament to a 16-team, five-day marathon of college basketball. But for Georgetown fans who suffered through last season's first-round tournament ouster, the only statistic that mattered Wednesday at Madison Square Garden was that the Hoyas outscored their opponent, defeating a woefully misfiring South Florida squad, 69-49, to advance to Thursday's quarterfinals.

- Washington Nationals catcher Jesus Flores returns to surgeon for more specialized treatment on shoulder
JUPITER, FLA. -- Nine days ago, Jesús Flores didn't want to even venture a guess at his rehab schedule, because past attempts had led to only more disappointment. Flores would plan to perform a once-fundamental, now-meaningful task, such as swinging a bat or throwing more than 90 feet. And then he couldn't, his progress stuck on pause.

- Washington Wizards face stretch of five games in six days
When the snowpocalypse struck the Washington region on Feb. 6, forcing the postponement of a home game against the Atlanta Hawks, the Wizards weren't exactly complaining. The blizzard stranded the team for three days in Orlando, where players got to enjoy some sun and didn't have to worry about shoveling or driving along icy roads.
- Many questioned ACC during the season, but most teams have answered call
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Georgia Tech Coach Paul Hewitt leaned back and spread his arms wide across the back of a black sofa at Greensboro Coliseum on Wednesday afternoon. Everything about his appearance -- soft eyes, steady tone, relaxed posture -- belied the tenuous postseason position the Yellow Jackets hold. Only his words indicated the dire circumstances under which Georgia Tech will compete this week in the ACC tournament.
- Virginia basketball tries to pinpoint where season went wrong
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Neither snow, nor most of its ACC opponents, could stop the Virginia men's basketball team in early February. Despite a blizzard that buried Charlottesville, 5,988 came to John Paul Jones Arena on Feb. 6 for the Cavaliers' game against Wake Forest. Virginia entered 5-2 in the ACC, and Athletic Director Craig Littlepage thanked the excited audience before the game.

You don't have to solve problems in history, Olsen reasoned. You just have to learn and remember.

- Celtics run past Wizards at end, 86-83
BOSTON - The mostly inexperienced and learning-on-the-fly Washington Wizards were in a position in which they are unaccustomed - on the road, dominating the once-removed NBA champion Boston Celtics at TD Garden. Al Thornton ruggedly attacked the basket, as he prevailed a head-to-head duel with Paul Pierce.
